Flying to Tanzania: Airports & Safari Connections
Getting to Tanzania is easier than it may first appear, with international connections available through major hubs in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and beyond.
When planning your safari with Serengeti Steppe, we can help you understand which airport and flight routing makes the most sense for your itinerary. The best option depends on where your safari begins, whether you are combining your safari with Zanzibar, and your preferred travel arrangements.
Which Airport Should You Fly Into?
Tanzania has several airports that can be relevant to an international safari itinerary. Choosing the right one can make your journey considerably smoother.
-
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Kilimanjaro International Airport is generally the most convenient international gateway for northern Tanzania safaris.
It is located between Arusha and Moshi and provides convenient access to destinations such as Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
If your safari focuses on northern Tanzania, we will normally recommend checking flights into Kilimanjaro first.
-
Arusha Airport (ARK)
Arusha Airport is primarily useful for domestic and regional connections rather than long-haul international arrivals.
It can be particularly convenient when connecting to or from safari destinations by domestic aircraft.
-
Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ)
If you are combining your safari with time on Zanzibar, flying into or out of Zanzibar can be a convenient option.
We can structure your itinerary around your international flights and connect your Zanzibar stay with your safari using domestic or regional flights where appropriate.
-
Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam (DAR)
Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's principal coastal and commercial gateway and can be useful for itineraries involving southern Tanzania, the coast, Zanzibar or other domestic connections.
For a classic northern Tanzania safari, however, Kilimanjaro is usually the more convenient international arrival point.
Flying to Tanzania from Europe
Travellers from Europe have a wide range of options for reaching Tanzania, including direct services where available and one-stop connections through major international hubs.
Common connection points include major European, Middle Eastern and East African hubs. Depending on your departure city, it may be possible to reach Tanzania with a single connection.
Because airline schedules and routes change, we recommend checking current flight schedules when booking your international journey rather than relying on fixed route information published online.
Flying to Tanzania from North America
Travellers from the United States and Canada will generally reach Tanzania through a connecting airport in Europe, the Middle East or another African hub.
Major international hubs can provide onward connections to Tanzania, with Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar being the most relevant arrival points depending on your itinerary.
When choosing between flight options, consider not only the ticket price but also the number of connections, connection times and your arrival time in Tanzania.
Flying to Tanzania from Asia
Travellers from Asia can reach Tanzania through major hubs in the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
Depending on your departure city, one-stop and two-stop itineraries may be available. When comparing options, we recommend considering the overall journey time and arrival schedule alongside the fare.
If your safari begins shortly after arrival, a routing that allows you to reach Tanzania earlier in the day may be preferable to a cheaper itinerary with a long or inconvenient connection.
Flying to Tanzania from Australasia
Travellers from Australia and New Zealand will generally need to connect through an international hub in Asia, the Middle East or Africa before continuing to Tanzania.
There are several possible routing combinations, so the most suitable option will depend on your departure city, travel dates and final destination in Tanzania.
What About Zanzibar?
Many travellers combine a Tanzanian safari with a few days on Zanzibar, and this can be incorporated into the same trip without unnecessary backtracking.
For example, you may arrive in Tanzania for your safari, fly from the mainland to Zanzibar after your safari, and then depart internationally from Zanzibar.
Alternatively, your trip can begin with a stay in Zanzibar followed by a flight to the mainland for your safari.
We can help you structure the safari and domestic flights around your international travel plans.
Can I Book My Own International Flights?
Yes. International flights are not included in our safari prices and are arranged separately by the traveller.
You are welcome to book your flights directly with an airline, through a travel agent, or using airline miles and other travel points.
We recommend confirming your international flights before finalising the safari, so that we can coordinate your airport transfers and itinerary around your arrival and departure times.
Once your flights are confirmed, please send us your flight numbers, arrival and departure times, and airport details. We will then coordinate the relevant transfers and ground arrangements as part of your safari.
Choosing the Right Arrival Time
When booking your international flights, the arrival time can be just as important as the flight route.
If you are beginning your safari immediately after arrival, we generally recommend allowing enough time for immigration, baggage collection and any unexpected flight delays before your scheduled safari departure.
For some itineraries, arriving in Tanzania a day before your safari begins can provide a more relaxed start and reduce the pressure of connecting directly from a long-haul international flight into a full day of safari.
We can advise you on the most practical arrival and departure arrangements once we know your itinerary.
International Flights & Your Safari Booking
International flights are normally booked separately from your safari unless otherwise agreed with us.
When arranging your safari, we will use your confirmed flight information to coordinate airport transfers, domestic flights and the timing of your safari activities where applicable.
If your international flight schedule changes, please let us know as soon as possible. Changes to arrival or departure times may affect transfers, domestic flights, accommodation or the safari itinerary, particularly when travelling to remote destinations.
